CASA Case Highlight - "Tom"

In order to illustrate and bring awareness to the need for Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers in our local community, Advocates for Children will be regularly highlighting one case each month which is currently on our waiting list.  Identifying information has been altered in order to protect the privacy of the families involved in these cases.

With all of our current Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers currently serving cases, and our an extensive waiting list of abused and neglected children in need of advocates, Advocates for Children is urgently seeking new volunteers.  These volunteers will serve as CASAs for children such as "Tom."

Tom is a newborn infant who was recently removed from his mother's custody after testing positive at birth for Methamphetamine.  Tom's mother was incarcerated for the majority of her pregnancy, and has failed two drug screens since her release to probation.  She is likely to return to custody soon, and Tom's father is currently in jail on theft charges.

A CASA volunteer is needed to guarantee that Tom's best interests are represented throughout his time in the child protection system.  Without a CASA volunteer, Tom may find himself moved from placement to placement, without a permanent place to call home.  Absent a stable adult influence standing by his side, Tom may fall behind in school and lose social development and self confidence. He needs an advocate who will fight for his right to a safe and loving home.

The volunteer who answers the call to stand up for children such as Tom will not be expected to go it alone.  To ensure that they are adequately prepared, all potential CASA volunteers receive 24 hours of training provided by Advocates for Children, and will be assisted with their case by our professional staff.

If you are interested in becoming a CASA volunteer for one of the 325 children like Tom who are currently on Advocates for Children's waiting list, you can sign up today by following this link or by calling the office toll-free at (877) 604-9402 to learn more.
