CASA Case Highlight - "Stephen"

In order to illustrate and bring awareness to the need for Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers in our local community, Advocates for Children will be regularly highlighting one case each month which is currently on our waiting list. Identifying information has been altered in order to protect the privacy of the families involved in these cases.

CASA_Case_Button.pngWith all of our current Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers serving cases, and an extensive waiting list of abused and neglected children in need of advocates, Advocates for Children is urgently seeking new volunteers.  These volunteers will serve as CASAs for children such as six-year-old "Stephen."

Stephen was placed in the care of the Indiana Department of Child services when his father was arrested for violating his probation.  Since that time, Stephen's father has failed to visit the child or participate in court-ordered rehabilitation programs, and currently has a warrant for his arrest for failing to comply with the terms of a house-arrest agreement.

Stephen has temporarily been placed in the care of his mother, who has her own history of addiction, but has completed a program of treatment and passed multiple drug screenings.

A CASA volunteer is needed to guarantee that Stephen's best interests are represented throughout his time in the child protection system.  This volunteer will work to guarantee that Stephen receives any therapeutic services he needs to deal with the trauma of his experiences.  The CASA volunteer would help to ensure that Stephen doesn't fall behind socially or in school as he transitions to his new home.  Importantly, the CASA volunteer will ensure that adequate oversight is in place to guarantee that Stephen's mother continues to provide a safe environment should her son be returned to her care.

The volunteer who answers the call to stand up for children like Stephen will not be expected to go it alone.  To ensure that they are adequately prepared, all potential CASA volunteers receive 36 hours of training provided by Advocates for Children and will be assisted with their case by our professional and experienced staff.

If you are interested in becoming a CASA volunteer and serving the 300 children like "Stephen" who are currently on Advocates for Children's waiting list, please sign up today or call the office toll-free at (877) 604-9402 to learn more.
