Volunteer

Children who have been the victims of abuse and neglect need more help than the system can provide.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) are ordinary people, just like you, with an extraordinary desire to help a child find a place to call home.

You do not need a social work background or legal expertise to be a successful volunteer, but you do need to be committed to your case and willing to advocate for what is in the child’s best interest. Part of CASA’s success has been the diversity of volunteers—men and women who are full-time workers, stay-at-home parents, retirees, college students and people of all races, religions, social, and economic backgrounds—who want to make a difference in the life of a child.

As a CASA volunteer, you will fight for their rights to grow, to learn and to be treated with dignity and respect.  You will help to break the cycles of fear, shame and violence in which too many of these children live, and give them the opportunity to rest safely in the embrace of a  loving and permanent family. Check out the FAQ for more details on the role of a CASA.

Time Commitment

Volunteers spend an average of 8-10 hours a month on their case, and are expected to remain involved in their case until permanency has been reached, which could take a year or more.  More complex cases may take longer.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years old.

  • Must successfully complete and pass the screening requirements of Advocates for Children (including a criminal history check, Child Protective Services (CPS) check and Sex Offender check).

  • Cannot be a current licensed foster parent.

  • Cannot be employed at an agency that holds a service provider contract with the Department of Child Services (DCS).
